Pastor Barry's "Chapter & Verse" Day 105
Pastor Barry's "Chapter & Verse" Day 105
April 15; Luke 11:1; 55/260(IV); ‘Teach Us to Pray’
Luke 11:1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."
The Lord Jesus was and is a Man of prayer. Jesus still is a Man of prayer, as the Word teaches us that even now Jesus, in heaven, always is interceding for us (Hebrews 11:25). Jesus had been praying and His disciples had to hear Him praying or note the amount of time He spent in prayer and the results His praying had on His life and ministry. Whatever it was caused the disciples to want to be able to pray the way Jesus did. Here is a powerful principle. When someone does something better than you do and the results of what they do are very apparent, learn to do what they do the way they do it. Ask them to teach you to pray or whatever they do you desire to learn. What a blessing to do something spiritually in such a manner that others desire to learn from you and do it in the same way. What this also tells us is that there is a proper way to pray. As with anything else, if you desire to learn to do something properly, find instructions and follow them. The Lord Jesus personally taught His disciples how to pray. An example is James, the brother of John, his knees were calloused like a camel from praying. Jesus taught them well. Nothing is more powerful than prayer. Prayer changes circumstances and brings the incredible power of God to bear upon a situation. In another sense, the Lord Jesus still teaches His disciples (us) how to pray. Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1). We have the Word of God (Jesus) clearly giving instruction on how to properly pray the different kinds of prayer taught in the Word.
