Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 126

May 6;   Colossians 4:2;   182/260(I);   ‘Serious Praying’

Colossians 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.     NLT

Paul, in this verse, is emphasizing the importance of prayer.  Prayer changes things.  Prayer brings the Lord on the scene to help.  Remember, God the Father gave the earth to mankind to rule over it.  The Father is a Gentleman and responds when He is asked to.  Adam, had been given authority on the earth and he lost it, and gave it to satan when he sinned.  The Lord Jesus Christ took that authority back from satan and once again gave it to mankind.  The Father answers the prayers of Christians when they seek His help in circumstances.  This verse teaches three important things.  First we must devote ourselves to prayer.  Knowing that prayer changes things and brings the Lord on the scene, how vital it is that we spend a good deal of time in prayer.  Second we have to be alert.  We have to sincerely concentrate on what we are praying about.  There are things that need prayer desperately and we must set our focus on the need and be ‘hooked up’ with our minds and spirits with the Lord.  Third we must have a thankful heart.  That is faith.  We know that the Word of God is the will of God.  We find chapter and verse that tells us the need we face has been taken care of.  Then we pray in faith, believing when we pray that the need has been met.  We stand until we see the manifestation of the answer to that prayer.  While we stand, we are thanking the Lord that He has heard our prayer and is answering it.  Prayer is not some formal, religious words that we speak by memory without even thinking about want we are saying.  The Lord changes things when we pray. How vital does that make it?
