March 11;        Romans 9:7;          126/260;        ‘Not Automatic’

Romans 9:7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, "In Isaac your seed shall be called."  

What this verse teaches is incredibly important and in a very real sense incredibly dangerous.  The incredible importance of this verse is that the Jewish people thought that because they were Jewish, they were automatically right with God.  Verse 6 tells us that the Jews were not all Israel (right with God), who are of Israel (the nation of Israel).  Abraham became the father of the spiritual Jews when he believed the Gospel message preached to him, by the Lord Jesus (a manifestation of Jesus prior to His natural birth), that one day in the future, Jesus would come and die on the cross for the sins of people.  The Lord made a covenant with Abraham and Abraham believed everything the Lord told him.  Once Abraham believed what Jesus shared with him and that he would become the father of many nations, he was ‘born again,’ made right with God, by believing the Gospel message to come.  Childless Abraham, had a son Isaac, with Sarah who had been barren.  Isaac was the heir of promise, the Lord told Abraham he would have when he believed on Jesus.  Thus spiritual Israel began with the birth of Isaac.  Here is the incredibly dangerous part of this verse.  People think that because they are of a certain Christian denomination or they attend a certain Church, they are automatically right with God.  They may even have been told that this is so.  Jesus said, ‘You must be born again.’  Regardless of the Church you attend or the ‘group’ you were with.  The Word teaches us this.  The Word is eternally important for us.
