Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 93

April 3;    2 Timothy 1:14;    93/260(II);    ‘Keeping Our Commitment’

2 Timothy 1:14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.

‘That good thing which was committed to you,’ was the call for Timothy to be a pastor.  Timothy was the pastor of the church in Ephesus, which was extremely large.  According to Rev. Rick Renner, who is a Greek scholar and a biblical historian, there were some challenges in the church in Ephesus and as Paul exhorts Timothy in verse 7 of this chapter, the Lord has not given to Timothy a spirit of fear.  Evidently the devil was trying to intimidate Timothy and Paul, the wise ‘elder statesman’ is encouraging him.  Notice that Paul tells Timothy that the Holy Spirit will help him fulfill his ministry as a pastor.  The Lord Jesus tells us in John’s gospel, speaking of the Holy Spirit, that He will send another Comforter, the Holy Spirit.  The word Comforter is the Greek word paraclete and means, one called alongside to help.  That is what Paul is encouraging Timothy to do, look to the Holy Spirit to help him pastor.  The Amplified Bible defines the word paraclete as Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby.  He is all of these things and lives in Timothy’s spirit and empowers Timothy to minister.  As Timothy prays in tongues the Holy Spirit will charge his spirit, helping Timothy to be bold.  As the Helper of Timothy, the Holy Spirit will help him make decisions and do what he needs to do.  As the Advocate, the Holy Spirit will defend Timothy like a powerful lawyer.  The Holy Spirit will comfort Timothy in trying times.  The Holy Spirit will counsel and strengthen Timothy.  The Holy Spirit will stand by Timothy every step of the way.  He will do that for you as well.
