Pastor Barry's "Chapter & Verse" Day 228

August 16;       John 6:35:       73/260(III);       ‘The Bread of Life’

John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

This is one of the seven I AM statements the Lord Jesus makes in the Gospel of John.  I AM is who appeared to Moses in the burning bush.  Moses asked the Lord, who shall I say sent me and the Lord Jesus (it was always Jesus who appeared in the Old Testament, it is called a theophany) said I AM that I AM.  I AM means I AM, I WAS and I Always Will Be.  In this verse, the Lord Jesus tells us that He is the bread of life.  Bread is our basic staple of life in the natural.  The Lord Jesus, who is the Word of God, is our basic staple of life in the spiritual.  As we read the Word of God and learn about the Lord Jesus, the Word feeds our spirit.  The Lord gave us the Word so that we could learn the truth about Him.  The Bible is our protection against religious deception.  We are loved too much for the Lord to allow us to be deceived, the results could be eternally tragic.  Everything we need to know about Jesus and all of the provisions that He has given to us are contained in the Word of God.  Notice we have to come to Jesus.  Obviously this means we must believe who Jesus is and accept His sacrifice on our behalf.  That is our eternal salvation.  But we must also come to Jesus by being diligent to spend quality time in the Word of God.  The bread is offered and we are told the bread will bless us.  We must choose to feed upon the Word.  There is no greater use of our time than to get God’s Word into our spirit.  Jesus told us if we continue in the Word we will know the truth and the truth will make us free.
