Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 220

August 8;       Luke 22:27;       66/260(III);       ‘The One Who Serves’

Luke 22:27 For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

Jesus’ disciples were disputing among themselves as to which of them would be considered the greatest.  The Lord then contrasts the ways of the world with His ways.  The powerful are considered great by the standards of the world.  Jesus tells them that this is not the way they should consider greatness.  Jesus tells them that the greatest serves.  In the natural, the person sitting at the table is ‘greater’ than the person who serves the one sitting.  Then, Jesus tells them that He is among His disciples as One who serves.  The greatest joy in being a Christian is the privilege of helping others.  Sharing the gospel, praying for a need that person may have or encouraging them with the Word of God.  Once you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and begin to learn God’s Word, the realization comes that this is the answer everyone needs and serving others becomes the greatest joy imaginable.  The inward joy of leading someone to Jesus, seeing someone healed by the power of the Holy Spirit when you pray for them or helping them without ever looking for a reward gives meaning to life.  Jesus Christ loved us enough to die for our sins and take our sicknesses upon Himself.  Our needs are met, the Word of God clearly teaches this.  We are assured of heaven when we leave this world.  Our value comes from the Lord, not from the fickle opinions of the world.  Serving others enables them to have what we have, which is everything
