Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 288

October 14;   John 5:40;   73/260(II);   ‘Not Willing’

John 5:40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.

The Lord Jesus healed a crippled man at the Pool of Bethesda.  Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath and when the religious leaders found out it was Jesus who healed the man, they persecuted the Lord and sought to kill Him.  Their hearts were hard because of envy.  When the religious leaders confronted Jesus He told them that God the Father was His Father.  For that response the leaders sought all the more to kill Jesus, because He made Himself equal with God. Jesus tells these religious leaders that they search the scriptures believing that they will find eternal life in them.  The scriptures all point to Jesus.  John 1:1 teaches that Jesus Christ is the Word of God.  Everything in the Word points to Jesus, because it is through Jesus that we obtain eternal life.  Because of their hatred for Jesus and their jealousy of Him, they refused to acknowledge that the scriptures all verified that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of God.  He tells them in this verse that their refusal to believe who He is, prevents them from having eternal life.  The Holy Spirit, who is the Author of the Word of God, in an incredible number of ways, clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that eternal life is through Him and only through Him.  If you believe the Word concerning Jesus, you will be Born Again, if you do not believe the Word concerning Jesus, you will be eternally separated from Him.  Based on the way Jesus taught, the anointing upon Him to heal and the miracles He did, those hateful religious leaders had to know He was the Messiah.  Their being not willing to accept Him sealed their doom.
