Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 287

October 13;   John 4:34;   72/260(II);   ‘Spiritual Sustenance’

John 4:34 Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work.      NLT

The Lord Jesus left Judea, heading toward Galilee.  To get to Galilee, Jesus and His disciples had to go through Samaria.  The Lord Jesus was weary and hungry from the day of ministry.  They stopped at a city in Samaria called Sychar.  The disciples left Jesus to go into the city to buy food.  There was a well in Sychar which Jacob had given to his son Joseph.  Jesus rested by the well.  A woman from Samaria came to the well to draw water, and the Lord Jesus ministered to her.  Jesus, by the Holy Spirit knew things about this woman.  The Lord was weary and hungry, but He was still anointed and as He always did, helped her.  The disciples returned with food, surprised that Jesus was speaking to a woman and they urged Him to eat.  Our Lord told His disciples He had food that they did not know of.  The disciples thought that someone had given Jesus something to eat.  Jesus was not speaking of natural food, He was speaking of spiritual nourishment and sustenance.  Just as natural food is needed, is enjoyable and gives strength, to Jesus, His spiritual food was doing the will of His Father and finishing the Father’s work.  To our Lord, and to us as His disciples, ministry was an absolute necessity.  Teaching, preaching, healing the sick and helping those in need was His joy.  He would pray, fellowship with His Father, ‘recharging’ His spirit and go from town to town blessing the people.  The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus and was His strength, helping Him to minister to incredible multitudes.  Jesus’ example is so exciting.  We too, have spiritual food, to enjoy and strengthen us for His work.
