Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 258

September 14;   Luke 2:11;   46/260(II);   ‘Christ the Lord’

Luke 2:11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

An angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds, watching their flocks in the vicinity of Bethlehem.  Bethlehem was called the city of David.  After getting over their fear of the angel and the glory of the Lord that surrounded him, the shepherds were told of the birth of Jesus.  The angel tells the shepherds that Jesus was born for them.  In reality, the Lord Jesus was born for all of us.  At the age of 30, when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus, when He was water baptized in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, Jesus’ earthly ministry began.  Three and one half years later, after being an incredible Example to us, the Lord Jesus gave His life for us, to redeem us from our sins and sicknesses.  In this one verse, we are told three vital truths about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  ‘Savior’ is derived from the name Jesus.  It means to save in the technical, Biblical sense, from our sins; Savior also means Healer and Deliverer.  The angel then tells the shepherds that Baby Jesus is the ‘Christ.’  Christ means the Anointed One, One who is saturated with the power of the Holy Spirit.  Remember, the Lord Jesus did no miracles until the Holy Spirit came upon Him in the Jordan River.  Finally, the angel tells the shepherds Jesus is ‘the Lord.’  Lord means One who is supreme in authority, the Messiah.  In one sentence the angel tells the shepherds and us, Jesus would save us from our sins, be our Healer and Deliverer.  The angel went on to say that Jesus would be anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit and as the Messiah, be supreme in authority.  What a resume for a Baby just born.  God became Man.
