Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 241

August 28;   Mark 1:17;   29/260(II);   ‘Fishers of Men’

Mark 1:17 Then Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."

The Lord Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, when He saw Simon (Peter) and Andrew his brother casting their net into the sea, because they were fishermen.  The Lord had different plans for Peter and Andrew, they were called to be Jesus’ disciples.  The Lord Jesus was ‘cool,’ He used their occupation to let them know what they would be doing from then on, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”  Immediately they left their nets and followed Jesus.  The Lord Jesus also called James and his brother John to be His disciples and they too, left their father Zebedee and some hired servants and followed Jesus.  Remember, before we were born, the Lord had a specific plan for each of us.  For the two pairs of brothers it was to be Apostles of the Lord.  Somehow knowing their call, when Jesus told them to follow Him, they immediately forgot their career as fishermen and began to minister and travel with the Lord.  God’s Word, the Bible is His general will for our lives.  Every Christian is called to be an Ambassador for Christ, a Minister of Reconciliation and a laborer who shares the gospel with others.  The difference is that Peter, Andrew, James and John were called to serve the Lord full time.  They were called into the ‘Five Fold’ ministry.  You may never be called to be a full time minister, but you are called to be a fisher of men.  Will you make sure you do everything you can to see to it that every member of your family is Born Again?  That you share the Lord with your friends, the people you work with and your neighbors.  Eternity is at stake.  Let’s go fishing.
