Pastor Barry's  "Chapter & Verse"  Day 227

August 4;   Matthew 16:15;   16/260(II);   ‘The Eternal Question’

Matthew 16:15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

The Lord Jesus and His disciples were walking toward their next destination, when Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I am?”  The disciples and the world have various answers.  Some of the answers include a prophet, a ‘mystic,’ a teacher, a great historical figure or the reincarnation of an Old Testament prophet.  A couple of those answers are partially true.  Jesus was a Prophet and a Teacher.  If these are your only answers, you are wrong, eternally wrong.  As the Lord and His disciples continued on their journey, Jesus’ question became very personal, “who do you say that I am?”  Our eternal destiny hinges on the correct answer to that question.  The Bible is the most important possession that you will ever have.  Is it a great historical Book?  Yes.  Does the Bible teach a great moral code?  Yes.  Does the Bible teach us about great men and women of faith?  Yes.  Even though all of that is true, the Bible was written for one specific reason, to show us in every way possible, that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  Humanity was separated from God the Father by sin.  Knowing this and being unwilling that we, the Lord’s greatest creation, should be forever lost, the Father and His Son, Jesus knew what they would do.  Since sin had to be paid for and we could not pay that price, the Lord Jesus came as a Man, He never sinned and willingly paid the price for our sins on the cross.  The correct answer, the only answer to that question is that Jesus is God’s Son and I believe He died for me and I accept Him as my Lord and Savior.  That is the answer that forever changes our eternal destiny.
